When a truly perceptive person can understand that the differentiation of the various species of life occurs only within material nature (or bodily distinction), and that all are again expanded from the same nature (at the time of universal creation) then he experiences Brahman realization by seeing equally all knowers of the sphere of action (within the relativity of nature).

Although that supreme principle is the illuminator of all the senses and their objects, He is devoid of material senses; although completely aloof, He is the maintainer of all (in the form of Lord Visnu); and although transcendental to the three modes of material nature, He is servable by that modal nature.

The five major elements (earth, water, fire, air, and ether), the personality component of ego, the element of intellect, the primordial element of material nature, the five perceptual senses (eye, tongue, tactile sense, nose, and ear), the five senses of action (voice, hands, legs, anus, and genital), the internal sense (mind), the five acceptable objects of the senses (form, taste, touch, smell, and sound), desire, hatred, happiness, unhappiness, the body, the perceptual faculty of the mind, patience, and the six material transformations of birth, sustenance, growth, maturity, decline, and destruction summarily, all these are known as k,etra, the sphere of action.

O Arjuna, goodness conditions the soul to happiness, and passion conditions him to action. But the mode of ignorance, covering the living being's knowledge, conditions him to indolence, slothfulness, and slumber.

You will be able to attain all this knowledge by satisfying the enlightened spiritual master with prostrate obeisances, relevant inquiry, and sincere service. Great souls who are most expert in scriptural knowledge and endowed with direct realization of the Supreme Absolute Truth will teach you that divine knowledge.

O Arjuna, one who performs routine works as a matter of duty, and abandons attachment and fruitive desire such a person performs renunciation of the nature of goodness. This is My opinion.

The spotlessly purehearted and self-satisfied soul who has attained to his conscious divine nature neither grieves nor craves for anything. Seeing all beings equally (in the conception of My supreme energy), he gradually achieves supreme devotion (premabhakti) unto Me.

Unflickering yoga meditation

Initially, action alone is said to be the cause of elevation for the sage desirous of attaining unflickering yoga meditation. When he has achieved continuous meditation, renunciation of all activity is delineated as the cause of his perfect trance in yoga.

Worship of the Vedic authorised dieties form of the Supreme Lord, the Brahmanas, the spiritual master amd men of wisdom; cleanliness, simplicity, celibacy and nonviolence to any living entity is declared austerity of the body.

Renunciation of one's daily duties is never desirable. To abandon routine duties out of delusion is false renunciation, or renunciation of the nature of ignorance.

O Arjuna, one who actually perceives My supramundane birth and activities enacted by My sweet will, does not undergo rebirth. After giving up his present body, he attains Me. Having become subservient to My divine pleasure (hladini-sakti) in the form of My revealed divine potency, such a soul achieves eternal devotional service unto Me.

All the various activities are in every way carried out by the (senses activated by the) modes of material nature. But a man deluded by identifying himself with his body and its extensions thinks, "I alone am accomplishing this."

Wednesday 11 December 2013

One who thus understands these truths regarding the modal material nature, the predominated soul, and the predominating Supersoul such a person will not take birth again, regardless of his material situation.

The demigod worshipers reach the appropriate demigod, the forefather worshipers go to the plane of their ancestors, and the worshipers of the ghostly section transfer to the ghostly plane. However, those who worship Me, undoubtedly come to Me.

Dhyana means contemplation

Krishna said that one who works without desiring the fruit of his action is both a Sannyasi and a Yogi. Not someone who does nothing at all. To become a Yogi, one needs to act. After one has attained Yoga (union) with "That," then one practices S’ama (restraint, peace, inaction).

This is another important idea and often repeated in the Bhagavad Gita. You must act. There is no place at all forlaziness or irresponsibility or for shirking your duty. You must do it. Whatever your duty is. Once you do your duty, remembering that you are not the doer, and you do not hanker after the results, you are purified. (Playing the game is important – not winning or losing.) Once you remember that it is the Lord who causes everything to happen and once you identify with or unite with God, then you are in Yoga. You are barely aware of what you are doing. You are skilled in your work, at peace and at ease. Now it makes no difference whether you actively do things or not.

S’iva is often called S’ankara – the one who causes S’ama or peace. S’iva sits out the entire creation and sustenance in meditation and does "nothing" for the most part. Yet he gets into the fray, when called upon, and finally at the end, he is responsible for the dissolution. S’iva is the ultimate Yogi and the ultimate Sannyasi. He keeps nothing and is everything.

Whatever the meritorious rewards indicated in the Vedic scriptures by ritualistic scarifies, rigorous asceticism or by philanthropic charity; one perfected in the science of uniting the individual consciousness with the Ultimate Consciousness transcends them all and archives the supreme, primordial abode.

My eternal superexcellent nature, form, qualities, activities, pastimes, and associated paraphernalia are all transcendental to illusion. But unintelligent men, unable to know this reality, think of Me thus: 'Oh, the supra-mundane, formless impersonal Brahman has recently accepted birth in an illusory form in Vasudeva's chamber.'

The Supreme Lord replied: O Pandava, (1) one who neither resents the appearance of revelation (the effect of the mode of goodness), activation (the effect of the mode of passion), and stupefaction (the effect of the mode of ignorance), nor hankers for their cessation; (2) who remains perfectly poised, being situated indifferently and unperturbed by the modal effects (based on happiness and unhappiness), remembering, 'The modes are engaging (with their respective objects)'; who is equally disposed to joy and sorrow; who is situated in continuous selfperception; who sees a lump of earth, a rock, or a piece of gold with the vision of equality; who is equipoised upon receiving either desirable or undesirable things; who is intelligent, and
remains situated in equilibrium in the face of abuse or praise, honor or dishonor; who sees alike both friend and foe; and who is completely aloof to all causes of obsession and abnegation certainly such a person is to be known as having transcended the three modes of material nature.

With more arduous endeavor than previously, the yogi who fully purifies his consciousness by rejecting the filth of all worldly desires and mental images, finally achieves the fruit of many lifetimes of yoga practice. Thereafter, he reaches the supreme goal.

O son of Kunti ! only the engagement of senses with their objects give rise to the sensation for cold, heat, pleasure, and pain. But these effects are temporary they come and go. Therefore, O Bharata, you are to endure them.

This 'trimodal', supernatural, (alluring) deluding energy of Mine is practically insurmountable. However, those who fully surrender exclusively unto Me can certainly surpass this formidable fantasy.

Humility, pridelessness, nonviolence, tolerance, honesty, service to the guru, purity, stability, self-control, detachment from sensual delights, absence of egotism, an objective view of the miserable defects of material life, that is, birth, death, the infirmity of old age, disease, etc., freedom from infatuation with wife, son, home, etc., nonabsorption in the happiness and unhappiness of others, constant equal-mindedness in the contact of desirable or undesirable objects, unfaltering and unadulterated devotion to Me, preference for solitude, indifference to mundane socializing, perception of the eternality of self-knowledge, and realization of the goal of divine knowledge certainly all these have been declared as actual knowledge, and everything apart from this is ignorance.

O Partha, sacrifice, charity, and austerity, or any duty performed without faith in the supreme objective, is known as 'asat', or depraved. Such works can never bestow an auspicious result, either in this world or the next.

(With the help of these five factors, all actions are effected:)
The body, ego (in the form of the knot of spirit and matter), the separate senses, the different endeavors, and destiny, or the intervention of the Supreme Universal Controller.

Wednesday 27 November 2013

Although there may be imperfections in their execution, it is better to remain faithful to one's natural prescribed duties than to perform another's duties immaculately. Sin is never incurred by a man conforming to his natural duties.

Sankhya Yoga

Sankhya Yoga teaches that there is an indestructible, Universal Soul. Krishna asked Arjuna to do his duty, renounce the fruit of his actions, realize the impermanence of sense-objects, and give up ego and attachment. Sankhya Yoga is the way of the wise, who can reason the Truth and think their way to detachment, simplicity, and lack of ego. My personal analogy is this: a wave that identifies with the ocean is eternal. A person who identifies with the universe is eternal. It is not I versus the Universe or I and the Universe – it is "I am the Universe."

And for one who will study this most righteous discourse of ours; I shall be propitiated by that as a performance of sacrifice of wisdom; this is My proclamation. Even the person who only listens to this with faith and without envy is liberated and will reach the elevated planetary system of those of virtuous activities.

Therefore without attachment, without interruption, perfectly perform prescribed actions; since by performing prescribed actions a person achieves the highest good.

Spiritual intelligence, knowledge, freedom from false perception, compassion, truthfulness, control of the senses, control of the mind, happiness, unhappiness, birth, death, fear and fearlessness, nonviolence, equanimity, contentment, austerity, charity, fame infamy: all these variegated diverse qualities of all living entities originate from Me alone.

I am equally disposed to all living entities; there is neither friend nor foe to me; but those who with loving sentiments render devotional service unto Me, such person are in Me and I am in them.

one should meditate on the omniscient, primordial, the controller, smaller that atom, yet the maintainer of the everything, whose form is inconceivable, resplendent like the sun and totally transcendental to the material nature.

Some see the soul as amazing and others describe the soul as amazing; similarly others also hear of soul as amazing and some even after having heard still have no knowledge of it.

Do your duty with the right attitude

What is the right attitude? This verse is the most famous verse in the Bhagavad Gita and is said to summarize its essence: You have the right only to work, never to its result. Do not be one whose motive is the results of action.
Never be attached to inaction.
Do your duty, (Karthavyam), with the right attitude. Perform your actions, in a state of Yoga, having given up attachment and being the same in success or in the lack of it. Take refuge in the intellect. Stay always in Reality, regardless of your material well being. What is Yoga? Yoga is said to be Sameness (Equanimity). Yoga is skill in work.
Literally, Yoga means uniting. It can be uniting of the self with God, of the mind with the soul, or the body with mind and soul. It is derived from the verb root: Yuj or Yoke. When you are totally absorbed in your work or activity, your body and mind are united with your self and with God.
When you have the right attitude, you will be resolute. Then your effort will not be wasted. People motivated by results are miserable. Their body may be engaged in activity but their mind is focused on the results and they are ‘divided’ not ‘united’. Those who are focused on results, cannot do a good job because their mind is not where they are. They are not absorbed in their activity.

A person who is not disturbed by the incessant flow of desires--that enter like rivers into the ocean which is ever being filled but is always still--can alone achieve peace, and not the man who strives to satisfy such desires.

Work does not bind a person

Work (Karm) does not bind a person who has renounced work --- by renouncing the fruits of work --- through KarmaYog, and whose doubts about the Self are completely destroyed by Vivek, the application of Self-knowledge, O Arjun.

Yoga requires moderation

Neither too much sleep and food, nor too little of it: and moderation in all actions. Total absorption in the Self – no desire for anything other than the Truth or Reality. Indifference to pain. Total Conviction and No depression. One should with draw by degrees. To such a Yogi whose Rajas (passion for action) has subsided, comes the supreme bliss of Brahman. Such a person sees the Brahman everywhere, the Self in all beings, and all beings in the Self.

He who sees Krishna everywhere and all things in Krishna does not lose sight of Krishna, nor Krishna of him. That person who worships Krishna residing in all beings the same, becomes a Yogi, and whatever he does he lives in Krishna. Arjuna then asked Krishna a question: Since the mind is essentially restless, how can it attain this equanimity? What happens to a person who has faith, but has a wandering mind?

Krishna then explained that practice can bring a restless mind under control. But should someone with faith be unable to concentrate, he will still never come to harm. Such a person will attain the worlds of the righteous and after spending many years there, he will be born again in the house of the pure and righteous, or into a family of Yogis. Such a birth is indeed rare. There he comes in contact with knowledge acquired in a previous birth and tries harder than before. Even a person who is merely interested in Yoga transcends the Vedas. Some Yogis attain the Supreme Goal over several births.

The Yogi is greater than ascetics, sages, and men of action. Therefore be a Yogi. And of all Yogis, those who are absorbed in Krishna are the highest.

Every action has it consequences. The consequences of one’s actions are called “Karma”. Typically, good karmacis Punyam and leads to benefits; bad karma is papam and it leads to hardship. When unpredictable bad things happen, Hindus attribute it to their bad karma, either from this life or from a previous life. Pious Hindus like to earn Punyam by doing good deeds and wash off their Papam through charity, penance, rituals and prayer. Sometimes it is hard to decide what is a good deed and what is a bad deed. The thought of Karma can paralyze pious people into inaction or remove their motivation to work. Krishna taught that if you do your duty, established in Yoga, not motivated by results, then Karma will not stick to you.
The part of the Vedas, called the Karmakanda (section on Karma), teach how to conduct your life and worship, in such a way that you have health, wealth, prosperity and all manner of material comforts on earth and then go onto a blissful life in heaven. Only the Vedanta and Upanishads discuss philosophy. The Vedas deal with the manifest universe. The manifest universe can be described by the three Gunas (qualities). The Sankhyas turn away from material pleasures and from the Karmakanda of the Vedas. They believe that intellect and knowledge are higher than karma. Krishna said that Karma is far inferior to BuddhiYoga. (Union with God through the intellect).
The Gita says that one should be above the three Gunas and free from dualities like good and bad, pleasant and unpleasant. People whose intellect is carried away by matters related to experiencing luxury - Bhoga, and wealth do not attain Samadhi. Samadhi is a state of togetherness with the beginning, the First, ie with God. The wise give up the fruits of their actions and become free of the bondages of life. They reach the state of ‘Anamayam’ (Non-illusory? Free from evil?) When you are free from illusion then you will know the difference between what you hear and what you ought to hear. When your agitated mind is still and in Samadhi, you will get rid of Karma and attain Yoga.

Whoever knows Me as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, without doubting, is the knower of everything. He therefore engages himself in full devotional service to Me, O son of Bharata.
